News › Player Profile - Owen Dive
Name: OWEN DIVE
Nic Name: My 'internet name' is Captainowie (ask me about it if you want to know the origins of the name), and when I was at Uni that (or variations of that) is what people called me. I don't hear it very much nowadays, but it's the closest thing I have to a nickname. Been Drumming: I learned the Tenor drum with Canberra Celtic Pipe Band starting in November 2003. After about a year, I decided to try the snare drum, which I found immensely enjoyable. I went to Scotland with City of Blacktown Pipe Band for the 2006 World Championships, and I spent most of 2007 in China as one of two drummers in the house Pipe Band (whose members came from all over the world) of a tea themed theme park (go figure!). This has led to me coining the following expression: 'Join a pipe band, and see the world!'. I joined the Burns Club Pipe Band shortly after I returned from China, about two years ago. Favourite Music: I'll listen to pretty much anything, except for rap and death metal, though I particularly like Crowded House. Pearl Jam and The Cranberries. Favourite Movies: I don't watch very many movies these days, but it'd be hard to go past The Usual Suspects for a favourite. Oh, and the Lord of the Rings movies were phenomenal too. Things I like: LEGO (you're never too old for LEGO), The Spooky Men's Chorale, Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds, Hornblower, freshly buttered hot toast, xkcd.com, Discworld novels and the satisfaction of solving a puzzle that I thought was going to be too hard. Things I dislike: Mega Bloks (crappy imitation!), side drum scores that aren't written properly, people who say 'ungyun' when they mean 'onion', getting up before the sun (especially on weekends), reality TV shows and puzzles that I can't solve because they're too hard. Plans for the Future: This year I've started my first permanent full time job, which has allowed me to be serious about the purchase of my very own home. As you might be able to infer from the previous statement, I plan to stay in Canberra for at least the next few decades. In the shorter term, though, I would like to earn a spot in the Grade 2 drum corps, and perhaps in a few years participate in an exchange with Canterbury Caledonia Pipe Band in New Zealand (Join a pipe band, and see the world!).
