Pipe Majors Corner - November 2009

The main focus for the last couple of months has been the competition season which took in competitions at Manly, Wollongong and Castle Hill. The Grade 4 Band played at all three contests with two seconds and a third respectively. Although it would have been nice to win one, the most important things for me were that the Band practiced hard and put in lots of effort, we "blooded" new players in James, Mitch, Courtney and Angus, Sean got valuable experience in the Pipe Major role, and we improved each contest. Grade 4 is perhaps the toughest grade these days with a number of bands potential winners. To place in every contest - the only band to do that - was a terrific achievement. So well done to the Grade 4 team!
Cheers

Name: OWEN DIVE
Nic Name: My 'internet name' is Captainowie (ask me about it if you want to know the origins of the name), and when I was at Uni that (or variations of that) is what people called me. I don't hear it very much nowadays, but it's the closest thing I have to a nickname.

TO THE BEAT OF HER DRUM

A little pat on the back for Jess Hutchison who has recently been elected Drum Sargeant of the Band.
Jess not only spends many hours each week tutoring both the Band’s and the College’s up and coming snare drummers but is tireless in her efforts to develop her own considerable drumming talents.
The quality of Jess’ drumming has been recognised by Blacktown Pipe Band who invited her to play with their Grade 1 Band at Wollongong and Castle Hill as well as asking her to join them on their trip to New Zealand in December. Well done Jess!

A bit of sad news to add to this Newsletter … Colin Marks and his family will be leaving – the day after the Christmas Party (Colin put a lot of thought into their departure date) to return to Ireland for Colin’s next posting.
It has been a real pleasure for the Band to have Colin, Sarah, Jessie and Matthew with us over the last two years and we wish them every happiness and success in their new home.
